Liverpool are just a step away from reaching the Champions League semi-final following an emphatic 3-1 victory over Benfica at the Estadio da Luz on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp's men continued their brilliant form with a win at Benfica to take control of the Champions League quarter-final, as Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz all net in Lisbon.

It was a highly-entertaining encounter but the Premier League club had to battle for the win to take a giant stride toward the semis.

In the 8th minute, Liverpool hit on the attack with all three forwards surging up the pitch, but Luis Diaz's pass was overhit and slightly evaded Mane but broke for Salah who fluffed the chance.

The Reds then broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Robertson swung in a corner and Ibrahima Konate rose high above everyone else to head the ball into the bottom right corner. 1-0 Liverpool.

Sadio Mane made it 2-0 in the 34th minute after Alexander-Arnold flung a gorgeous cross across field to find Luis Diaz on the left side of the box.

The Colombian headed it down to the Senegalese in the box who finished confidently.

And four minutes into the second half, a costly error for Konate allowed the hosts to pull one back.

The Liverpool defender hashed his clearance of a right-sided cross and let it run through him and Nunez scored.

And in the 87th minute, Luis Diaz buried the game as he seized his chance and skipped past on the left before slotting home.

The Colombian celebrated raucously in front of the home fans and seems to be loving the boos. It ended; Benfica 1-3 Liverpool.

Manchester City 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Sports Brief earlier reported that Manchester City who are the reigning Premier League champions on Tuesday night, 5 April, defeated visiting Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.

The Champions League encounter was a challenging one for Manchester City as the Etihad fans had to wait until the 70th minute before Kevin De Bruyne scored the goal that later turned to be the winner.
