  • Chelsea are expected to get a new owner by the end of May ahead of Roman Abramovich's departure
  • Abramovich is expected to pave the way for a new owner after he was slapped with sanctions by the UK government
  • A £1.6billion debt loaned to the club by the Russian oligarch is now understood to be standing in the way of a takeover bid by potential buyers
  • Abramovich had initially announced he will forgo the mega amount but has since reportedly changed his mind

Chelsea could reportedly be booted out of the Premier League next season should the club fail to find a new owner soon.

Current owner Roman Abramovich is expected to step down to pave the way for a new reign after the UK government sanctioned him.

However, The Sun reports a takeover bid by potential buyers is in danger of falling through in a fresh twist that could see the club suffer more repercussions.

The publication claims the delicate situation has been occasioned by the £1.6billion loaned out to the club by Abramovich through an investment vehicle.

Abramovich had initially made it clear he did not want the mega-money loan back in what would have been a reprieve for potential buyers.

However, the Russian oligarch is believed to have changed tune on his stand, leaving takeover bids on the brink of collapse.

Chelsea living on borrowed time

SunSport reports it has been reiterated to Chelsea that the club’s operating licence only runs until May 31 - meaning the West Londoners are living on borrowed it.

The reports adds that unless a deal that is acceptable to the Government is realised by that date, Chelsea face the prospect of being banned from the Premier League.

The Blues are currently placed third on the standings after a mixed season marred with administration and financial challenges.

Chelsea keen to sign PSG ace

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Chelsea have reportedly included Paris Saint-Germain defender, Presnel Kimpembe, in their shortlist of potential players to replace Antonio Rudiger this summer.

The Blues will be keen to reinforce their backline with a number of defenders set to depart this summer, with Rudiger headlining a list of key players projected to dump the club at the end of the season.

A move to Stamford Bridge will see the France international reunite with Thiago Silva and Thomas Tuchel.
