  • It has been a dreadful campaign in terms of separating sides at the final whistle in the 2021/22 DStv Premiership
  • The season will go down in history as the most goalless-draw ridden one in the Premier Soccer League era
  • This is compounded by the fact that it already on course to be the driest on record in terms of goal scoring

It has been said before on numerous occasions, but local football is seriously short on goal scorers currently.

A few weeks ago, the record for the most goalless draws (40) in a DStv Premiership season was broken in a match between Chippa United and Cape Town City. This breached the previous high (or low) of 39 set in the 2001-22 Castle Premiership campaign.

Sports statisticians OptaJabu revealed that this unwanted landmark has increased to 45 since then, with 10 matches still left in the season. The biggest offenders in goalless stalemates thus far are Cape Town City (10), Marumo Gallants and Chippa United (9), and Amazulu and Orlando Pirates (8).

Ironically, the goalscoring records in the league and across all competitions by one player were under threat at one point from Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile, as reported in IOL. Shalulile has 22 league goals and 29 in matches thus far, with one match to go against Royal AM tomorrow. He will need to score a hat-trick and more to equal and best Collins Mbesuma's legendary mark set in the 2004-05 season.

In terms of total goals across all competitions, Mbesuma scored 35 that season, while Shalulile is stranded on 28 as per Transfermarkt, unlikely to score seven goals in one go unless something extraordinary occurs in Durban.

A brutal reminder that South African football is short of goalscorers is on the cards as the 2021-22 DStv Premiership season draws to a close.

As reported by Sports Brief, Mamelodi Sundowns has already proven that it is a "farmers league", having wrapped up the league title recently, their fifth on the bounce.

On top of this, this is already the season with the most goalless draws since the Premier Soccer League was established in 1996.
