Former Barcelona full-back Dani Alves is under investigation over an allegation he improperly assaulted a woman in a Spain nightclub last month.

Spanish media had reported that a woman had accused the Brazil international of touching her beneath her underwear without consent at a nightclub.

Alves, who was part of Brazil's World Cup squad that exited at the quarterfinals, has denied any wrongdoing after Catalonia's Supreme Court confirmed the accusation.

“Barcelona investigating magistrate’s court number 15 has opened proceedings for an alleged crime of sexual assault due to a complaint presented by a woman against a football player for events that allegedly occurred at a Barcelona nightclub this past month of December,” the court’s statement reads via CNN.

“The matter is in the investigative phase and at this time we do not have more information.”

While the statement did not specifically name Alves, a court spokeswoman confirmed that the 39-year-old was the subject of the complaint, per Reuters as relayed by Daily Mail.
