Lewandowski, unfortunately, missed out on the coveted individual diadem in 2020 after the Ballon d’Or ceremony was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The former Bayern Munich goal poacher registered a staggering 58 goals and 10 assists in all competitions during that season and was the overwhelming favourite to be crowned as the best player in the world.
Fast forward, Madrid captain Karim Benzema looks set to annex the 2022 Ballon d’Or, and when the 33-year-old was quizzed about the impending ceremony he made a light-hearted joke before backing his rival.

Lewandowski has taken to life in La Liga like a duck to water after trading Bayern Munich to FC Barcelona, scoring an eyewatering 14 goals in 12 games across all competitions.
When will the awards be held?
This year's Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place at the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris on Monday, October 17.
Lewandowski blames defenders for Barca draw
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League round of 16 suffered a huge dent - and Robert Lewandowski is not happy about it.
The 33-year-old forward’s brace was not enough to secure all 3 points against Inter Milan, as the Catalans played a 3-3 draw against the Serie A giants at Camp Nou.
Lewandowski has now blamed Barcelona’s poor defending for the result. He believes they could have done better at preventing Inter Milan from scoring, Football Espana reports.
