South Africa to Face Nigeria in Africa Women Cup of Nations, Banyana and Super Falcons to Renew Their Rivalry

An intense rivalry will be renewed in the Africa Women Cup of Nations when South Africa clash with Nigeria.

Banyana Banyana and the Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C of the tournament, which will take place in Morocco in July.

Nigeria has gotten the better of Banyana eight times before, three of those coming in the tournament's finals. Banyana have been runners up in the tournament five times but have never lifted the trophy.

Nigeria, on the other hand, have won the tournament a record 11 times. The Africa Women Cup of Nations has only been held 13 times, and Equatorial Guinea are the only other side to have taken home the trophy, winning it twice.

Nigeria and South Africa have been drawn in Group C of the tournament along with debutants Burundi and Botswana, SuperSport.com reported.

According to the official FIFA rankings, Nigeria are the number one women’s team on the continent and 39th in the world. South Africa are number 4 on the continent and 57th in the world.

Botswana are 28th in Africa, while Burundi are not even within the top 40 on the continent.

Banyana Banyana are the pride of the nation. That’s how fans describe the side after they beat Algeria to qualify for the Africa Women Cup of Nations, Sports Brief earlier reported.

The tournament will take place in Morocco in July. Bafana beat Algeria 3-1 on aggregate to qualify for the tournament, and fans are praising the side for bringing back some pride to the nation, IOL reported.

Banyana went into the game with a two-goal advantage, and despite conceding a goal in the first half, Banyana remained resolute. Linda Motlhalo scored a penalty to restore their two-goal lead, SAFA reported.
