  • The great Lucas Radebe, the legendary former Kaizer Chiefs, Leeds United and Bafana Bafana defender, will have an influential role in African football
  • Radebe was appointed to CAF's technical and development committee alongside other African football greats
  • However, he found this elevation bittersweet, decrying how South African football authorities either discourage or snub former players from having a say in local football matters

Bafana Bafana's legendary former captain Lucas Radebe will have an important say in African football matters from now on.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United rock was nominated to CAF's technical and development committee alongside other legends like Cameroons Jeremi Njitap and Senegal's Khalilou Fadiga.

However, according to SowetanLIVE, Radebe wasn't an entirely happy man, having a go at South African football authorities like SAFA for overlooking the input of former players, or discouraging them from participating in the discourse because of politics.

Radebe said:

“Obviously, it’s been a disappointment for me. If it’s going to happen, it will happen but we know exactly the challenges that we are facing in the country, which is not really a football matter. It is very disappointing for me because it discourages those who would love to get involved, especially the players.”

TimesLIVE reported that Radebe called the recent controversial South African Football Association national elective conference a mess. Danny Jordaan won reelection to the role of the association's president amid several sideshows that brought the organisation further into disrepute.

The South African Football Association's controversial national elective conference last weekend took a nasty turn when eNCA journalist Hloni Mtimkulu was manhandled by one of the organisation's officials.

As reported by Sports Brief, Mtimkulu was using a phone to film a couple of SAFA officials arguing in a heated confrontation outside one of the Sandton Convention Centre halls when the incident occurred.

The unnamed man attempted to snatch the phone out of her hands, leading to words being exchanged.
