The competition is a charity initiative that Podolski has been involved in for many years. The striker was red carded during the semi-final encounter.

As Goal reports, the striker was angry after the referee gave a penalty against him. He lost his cool and threw a water bottle towards the direction of the match officials.

The 37-year-old's sending off eventually cost his team as Rot-Weiss Essen went through to the finals and won the competition after beating Blau-Weiss Lohne.

Podolski is an FA Cup winner with Arsenal. He was also in the books of German giants Bayern Munich where he won the Bundesliga title in 2008. The striker was also part of Germany's World Cup-winning squad in 2014.

He joined Gornik Zabrze in 2021 from Turkish side Antalyaspor. He has since scored 11 goals in 41 appearances for his side.

Podolski's wonder goal

Previously, Sports Brief reported that former Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski hit the headlines after scoring a wondrous goal inside his own half for Polish side Gornik Zabrze.

The 37-year-old has a reputation for scoring stunners, and his latest was just another one in his huge catalogue of stupendous strikes.

Podolski won the World cup with Germany in 2014. Still, he has faded into obscurity after exiting the Gunners in 2015, playing for several clubs in and out of Europe. Since leaving Arsene Wenger's side in 2015, Podolski has played for Inter Milan, Vissel Kobe, Galatasaray and Antalyaspor before joining his current club, Polish side Gornik Zabrze.
