Ghana Captain Gladson Awako Suffers Injury Ahead of CHAN Tournament

Gladson Awako, the captain of Black Galaxies, has suffered a knock which could rule him out of Ghana's opening game at the CHAN tournament against Madagascar.

The Hearts of Oak star picked up an injury in Ghana's pre-CHAN friendly against Algeria on Saturday in Algiers.

Awako was withdrawn from the game after just 25 minutes and was replaced by Sylvester Simba as Ghana held Algeria to a goalless draw.

The extent of Awako's injury is yet to be known but the player looks to be in serious pain as he walked off the pitch during the friendly.

The Black Galaxies continue their preparations ahead of the tournament which begins on January 13, 2023. Ghana will face Mozambique in their final preparatory game before their first match against Madagascar next week.

Ghana are making a return to the tournament after missing the last three editions. The home-based national team defeated Nigeria to qualify for CHAN 2022.

The Black Galaxies are hoping to win the competition for the first time, having been to the final twice in the past, in 2008 and in 2014.

Ghana arrive in Egypt for camping

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the home-based national team of Ghana, the Black Galaxies have arrived in Egypt for pre-camping ahead of the 2022 CHAN tournament in Algeria.

The team made up of 25 players will step up preparations in Cairo, where the Black Galaxies will engage in a series of friendlies.

Coach Annor Walker, who is determined to make a mark at the African Nations Champions started camping the player at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence three weeks ago.

Black Galaxies beat Benin

Ghana's Black Galaxies have taken a first-leg advantage from their 2022 Championship of African Nations qualifiers after victory over Benin in Cape Coast.

Goals from Hearts of Oak trio Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Mohammed Alhassan and Gladson Awako ensured the Black Galaxies travel to Cotonou in a fortnight time knowing a draw or defeat with a minimum of two goal sees them through to the next stage.

Ghana got off to a great start as Afriyie Barnieh pulled off a great save from Benin's goalkeeper Obasa after driving from 25 yards.
