5 NPFL Players to Join the Super Eagles When Camp Opens Ahead of 2022 AFCON Tournament

  • Most of the Europe based players invited for the tournament will not join the team until January 2, it was gathered
  • However, five players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will now join the team as standby players

Nigeria open their camp for the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday, December 29, as reports claim only a few players are expected on Day 1.

Soccernet are reporting that five players in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will be drafted to join the squad in training and act as standby.

Nigeria are drawn in Group D of the tournament alongside Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan and will begin their campaign against the Pharaohs on January 11.

Coach Augustine Eguavoen has invited 28 players to the team and reports now claim five players from the domestic league will join them.

According to the report, just a number of foreign players are expected in camp on opening day, so there is need to bring in a couple of players based in Nigeria.

Any of these five stars are also likely to be potential replacements for any player that pulls out of the 28-man squad due to an injury.

The foreign professionals expected in camp are players from the Italian Serie A and Russian Premier League. The Uk contingents, especially the Premier League players, will not arrive until January 2.

Napoli of Italy striker Victor Osimhen is already in town, although it is not known yet if he will return to Italy for his scheduled checkup with club doctors as he continues his recovery from a facial injury.

Meanwhile, Ademola Olajire who is the media director of the Nigerian Football Federation has stated emphatically that Victor Osimhen will definitely be among the Super Eagles players for the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

There have been reports that Italian side Napoli are not ready to release the Nigerian player because of how he is currently recuperating from injury.

Ademola Olajire made it clear that Victor Osimhen will arrive Super Eagles camp on January 2.

Sudan arrive Cameroon ahead of AFCON kick-off

Sports Brief earlier reported that Cameroonian cities are beginning to bubble ahead of the January 9 kick-off date for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, Complete Sports reports.

The Falcons of Jediane arrived the host country as they made the confirmation on their Twitter handle.

It was gathered that players and officials landed in Yaounde on Tuesday to confirm themselves as one of the early arrivals.
