The ministry, through its Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed announced the disbandment of FKF on Thursday, November 11, over misappropriation of funds allocated to the football governing body.

CS Amina subsequently unveiled a new caretaker committee which shall take charge of the affairs of football in the country on interim for a period of six months.

The 15-member caretaker team is led by retired judge Aaron Ringera effectively rendered Mwendwa's camp obsolete even as they face graft charges.

With opinion still divided following the ministry's drastic move, COTU has now thrown its support behind the decision, insisting it was long overdue.

In a letter signed by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, the organisation noted the poor state of football in the country was enough ground to send FKF packing.

"This was a long overdue decision and one which will entrench discipline in the sport. For a long time, the FKF has been a thorn in the flesh of Kenyan football considering they have been engaging in unnecessary politics and fights with not only the players and government but also other key actors in the football sector in Kenya," the letter said in part.
"The poor performance of the national team and other football clubs, in Kenya, is out of the poor leadership and mismanagement of funds that had become synonymous with FKF. Therefore, it was only right for the government to intervene," the letter continued.

Nick Mwendwa arrested

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported Nick Mwendwa was apprehended by officers drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

This came a day after his administration was stripped of its duties by the Sports CS Amina Mohammed.

The embattled FKF president faces accusations of misappropriation of funds while in office.
