The Athletic Bilbao star was hugely instrumental in ensuring that Spain won, and he even received the Man of the Match trophy for his performance.

The Spanish side grabbed a 1-0 win thanks to a Riccardo Calafiori own goal, The Guardian noted.

Thanks to that victory, Spain booked their place in the knockout rounds of the competition, while Italy will have to face Croatia in their next fixture to secure their passage to the next round.

The 21-year-old winger, who has Ghanaian heritage, stole the show against the Azzurri and particularly troubled Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

The Italian right-back had difficulty dealing with the young winger and often found himself unable to keep up.

Williams’ performance soon started trending on social media, with fans trolling Di Lorenzo for his inability to keep up with the Spaniard.

@KUSH23TV_ commented:

"Nico Williams has just announced himself on the world stage. Phenomenal performance and a gentle reminder to everyone that he has a release clause of just £43m."

@FrankKhalidUK added:

"I love the way Nico Williams plays!!! Causing loads of problems to the Italian defenders."

Inaki reacts to brother's performance against Italy

Williams had all eyes on him as he ran riot against Italy, but there was one person watching his outing with more interest than others.

Sports Brief reported how Niko's older brother, Inaki, took to social media to comment on his siblings' performance, calling it pure cinema.

The duo both play in La Liga for Athletic Club Bilbao, but Inaki opted to represent Ghana internationally while Niko is turning out for Spain.
