With the rise of social media, football clubs have found a new way of connecting with their fans globally.

Clubs can now bypass traditional media outlets, and directly engage with supporters, and even communicate important details with them.

However, there are teams whose global appeal transcends borders and languages.

Whereas some of these teams have grown their popularity on social media based on their history and dominance, others have acquired a sizable audience through marquee signings.

Major League Soccer side Inter Miami and Saudi giants Al Nassr are classic examples, with the two teams landing two of arguably the best players in the history of football.

Al Nassr, for instance, are understood to have gained a lot of traction on social media after they completed the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in January 2023.

According to Yahoo News, the Saudi club gained more than five million new Instagram followers within days of announcing Ronaldo's arrival.

For context, the club's platform followers stood at about 850,000, but they skyrocketed to their current 26 million due to the Ronaldo effect.

Which are the most followed clubs?

According to recent research conducted by CIES Football Observatory, La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are the most followed teams online.

Real, recently crowned Champions League winners, sits top of the charts with about 410 million followers across all social media platforms.

The following includes 162 million followers on Instagram and close to 51 followers on X.

Barcelona rank second on the list with 360 million followers, almost 40 million more followers than Manchester United, who are the highest-placed Premier League team.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are fourth on the list, while Manchester City complete the top five podium with 158 million followers.
