Chelsea have been the busiest club in the transfer market since the Todd Boehly-led consortium took over from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

The club let go of some top first-team stars last summer on permanent and loan moves, including academy star Mason Mount and most expensive striker Romelu Lukaku.

The team struggled under former head coach Mauricio Pochettino, but some players who left last summer flourished elsewhere.

Sports Brief looks at the six players who left Chelsea last summer and won trophies.

Players who left Chelsea and won trophies

1. Kepa Arrizabalaga

Spanish goalkeeper Kepa is the biggest beneficiary. According to the NY Times, he had two options to leave on loan and chose Real Madrid over Bayern Munich. He won three trophies, including the La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League. He will return to Stamford Bridge but is expected to leave again.

2. Mason Mount

The much-maligned academy graduate left on acrimonious terms. After a contract dispute with the club, he chose Manchester United as his next destination, which angered the fans. He won the FA Cup in his first season, shattering his Wembley curse, which has caused him to lose his last six finals at the stadium.

3. Hakim Ziyech

Ziyech was the magician of Amsterdam whose lights dimmed in London. He was part of the heavy recruit in the summer of 2020 but failed to meet expectations. He left the club last summer and joined Galatasaray winning the Turkish league title and cup.

4. Kalidou Koulibaly

The Senegalese defender spent a season at Stamford Bridge and was not allowed a second season to redeem himself before he was sold to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. He won three trophies: the Saudi Pro League title, the Super Cup, and the King’s Cup.

5. Mateo Kovacic

Kovacic formed a midfield trio with N’golo Kante and Jorginho during his time in London, and like his partners, he left the club last summer. He joined Manchester City and won the English Premier League title in his first season at the Etihad Stadium. However, he lost his seventh consecutive final at Wembley by losing the FA Cup.

6. Baba Rahman

The Ghanaian international spent eight years on Chelsea’s books and was allowed to leave for free last summer. He joined PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece and won the Super League. He scored six goals and provided three assists in 28 games.

Players Chelsea sold too early

Sports Brief previously analysed five players Chelsea sold too early during their mass exodus last summer, the majority of whom were part of their 2021 Champions League-winning team.

Mount's controversial departure made fans hate him, but he was a player the club should have kept to give the new players that Chelsea identity.
