Real Madrid forward was forced to clarify his comments after a wave of criticism over a recent interview.

The 23-year-old was a trending topic on social media on Thursday, May 30, after his interesting comments describing Manchester City as the best team in the world.

Los Blancos defeated the Citizens in the Champions League quarter-final, but Rodygo recently told GQ Espana that Pep Guardiola was the better side.

He said, “For me (City) is the best team in the world, the one that plays the best football.

“I think that the most difficult rival has already left, but that does not mean that it will be easy to win the final now. With Bayern it was very difficult and with Borussia it will be very difficult too."

Can Rodrygo leave Real Madrid?

Rodrygo’s sentiments ahead of the Champions League final appear to have angered some Real Madrid fans, who now want the Brazilian to leave the club.

With Kylian Mbappe and Endrick set to join the La Liga champions next summer, there is bound to be stiff competition in attacking areas at the Santiago Bernabeu. This has, in turn, sparked speculation that Rodrygo could be deemed surplus to requirements.

According to Madrid Universal, Real Madrid could ask for as much as €170 million for Rodrygo.

Rodrygo’s stance on Real Madrid

Amid all the speculation, Rodrygo slammed media for apparently taking his interview out of context.

The Brazilian reiterated his commitment to Real Madrid through a message on his official X handle.

“A very annoying situation occurred today, where one of my interviews was completely taken out of context,” he wrote.
“To be very direct, I am VERY happy at Real Madrid, I live a dream every day and it does NOT cross my mind to leave the club of my life! Now we continue with history to make. HALA Madrid.”

Last November, Rodrygo signed a contract extension at Real Madrid to keep him with the La Liga champions until the summer of 2028.

How Rodrygo can win Champions League Golden Boot

Sports Brief also reported on the Champions League top scorers, with Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe joint top with eight goals.

Eight players are tied in fifth place in the rankings with five goals each, including Rodrygo.

The 23-year-old, along with his Brazilian counterpart Vinicius Junior, could add to their tally in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, June 1.
