Former Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United star Edinson Cavani produced a contender for miss of the season after failing to score from three yards out.

Cavani, who plies his trade in Argentina for Boca Juniors, missed a sitter for his team during their latest outing against Nacional Potosi.

During the Copa Sudamericana clash, the Uruguay international looked certain to score after racing into the penalty box and latching onto a cross.

However, he somehow fluffed his lines, completely mishitting the ball, which went harmlessly wide.

A video of the incident shared by @BeSoccer showed Cavani’s immediate reaction after the miss as he openly showed his frustration while inside the opposition’s net.

Luckily for the 37-year-old, the miss did not prove costly, as Boca ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Despite his miss, Cavani was on the scoresheet, and so was another former Manchester United man - Marcos Rojo.

Thanks to the win, Boca finished second in their group, behind Fortaleza.

Cavani has been the key man behind his team’s success in the group stages of the Copa Sudamericana, scoring thrice in four games.

Cavani’s European stint

The shocking miss from Cavani told a tale of a player who was perhaps in the twilight years of his career.

Fans with long memories will likely not discredit the striker based on what they recall from him in his prime.

He is considered one of the best strikers of his generation and has played for big teams, including Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

At some point, he was Napoli’s all-time goal scorer with 104 goals, but his tally has since been surpassed. Dries Mertens holds that record with 148 strikes.

According to Transfermarkt, Cavani has 382 career goals in 681 appearances.

When Cavani scored bicycle kick

In March 2024, Sports Brief reported on Edinson Cavani’s delightful bicycle kick for Boca Juniors.

The former Manchester United man rolled back the years with a man-of-the-match performance for Boca Juniors against Central Norte.

He scored his team’s second goal in extraordinary circumstances, showing impeccable athleticism to score a bicycle kick in the 56th minute.
