The saga between Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint Germain has taken a new twist after it emerged the French club has yet to pay the forward his April salary.

The two parties are at odds over a financial arrangement they reached ahead of Mbappe’s impending move to Real Madrid.

According to French outlet L’Équipe, PSG has yet to pay the 25-year-old his April salary as well as an additional bonus.

PSG president Nasser Al Khelaïfi, who remains in charge of the club’s dealings with Mbappe, reportedly made a U-turn on Mbappe’s bonuses, and demands a compensation from Real Madrid, now that Los Blancos are set to acquire the Frenchman for free.

Diario AS reports that Al Khelaïfi wants Real Madrid to pay back the €80 million ($86.83 million) loyalty bonus PSG paid to Mbappe in February 2024 as compensation for his impending move to Spain.

In August of 2023, Mbappe waived the loyalty bonus in good faith so that he could see out the remainder of his contract without straining PSG financially.

Real Madrid president’s stance

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is, however, adamant that compensation is completely out of the question since the La Liga giants are under no obligation to pay a player who will be out of contract in the next few weeks.

This predicament leaves PSG in a difficult situation, as the club was unable to convince Mbappe to stay.

According to Fabrizio Romano, lawyers have now been involved in a bid to end the stalemate amicably.

Mbappe’s PSG woes

Since his refusal to sign a contract extension with PSG, Mbappe has had a turbulent time at the French club.

Not only was he left out of PSG’s pre-season tour of Asia last summer, but he was also put in the list of ‘undesirables’ and made to train away from the first team.

This did little to stop the 2018 World Cup winner from doing what he does best: scoring 44 goals in 48 matches in the 2023/2024 season, helping PSG to the Ligue 1 title and French Cup.

After it became increasingly obvious that Mbappe was not going to reverse his PSG departure, manager Luis Enrique relegated him to a more sporadic role in the team.

Notably, he was not featured in PSG’s final two games of the season.

Kylian Mbappe desires to play for Milan

Sports Brief also reported on Mbappe’s subtle interest in playing for AC Milan.

While Real Madrid are understood to be the firm favourites to land his services, the former Monaco man has conceded that a switch to Italy is also probable.

When asked which club he would play for, the 2018 World Cup winner singled out AC Milan as a team he had admired since childhood.
