Mamelodi Sundowns veteran goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, is celebrating his 39th birthday.

The Uganda legend is now older than his coach, Rulani Mokwena, who only turned 37 in January this year.

The goalkeeper is playing in his 18th season in the DStv Premiership and is not ready to retire just yet.

Onyango moved to South Africa in 2006 when he joined SuperSport United as a 21-year-old goalkeeper from Ethiopian side, Saint George.

In South Africa, he developed to become one of the best shot-stoppers in Africa. He has played Masandawana since 2011 and has won plenty of silverware.

Onyango has won 11 league titles in South Africa, a CAF Champions League medal, the African Football League, the Nedbank Cup (3x), the Telkom Knockout (2x), and MTN8.

Since Ronwen Williams arrived in 2022, his minutes have significantly reduced. However, with Sundowns participating in many competitions, he has gotten a chance to show that he can still do it at the top level.

There have been many instances where the coach is younger than the player. For instance, Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon was older than coaches, Andrea Pirlo and Roberto De Zerbi, when Sassuolo faced Juventus in 2021, per The Guardian.

Onyango was in the PSL when his teammate, Siyabonga Mabena was born in 2007, per KickOff. Eight players in the DStv Premiership are older than Mokwena, per The South African.

Onyango reaches new milestone

Sports Brief earlier reported on Onyango becoming the most successful player in South African football history when he won the 2022 PSL title.

Onyango surpassed ex-Sundowns star Hlompho Kekana, who had eight titles. If he remains at the club, he could win his 12th league title next season.

Mosimane praises Mokwena

Sports Brief also reported on former Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane, applauding Mokwena's accomplishments at the club.

Mosimane highlighted Mokwena's ability to take the club to the next level. Mokwena replaced the current Abha Club coach.
