France Football, the French magazine behind the Ballon d'Or award, is reportedly considering awarding Robert Lewandowski the 2020 edition of the prize.

The coveted 'golden ball' is one of the most prestigious individual football awards, with Lionel Messi having won it the most times in history.

The Argentine has been crowned the winner of the gong on eight occasions, three times more than his football nemesis, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Given its competitive nature, a number of top footballers have in the past missed out on winning the prize despite their world-class status.

According to GiveMeSport, Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Paolo Maldini, Xavi, and Gianluigi Buffon are among the legendary footballers who never won the award.

Robert Lewandowski could get the 2020 Ballon d'Or

Barcelona striker, Lewandowski, is one of the other top players who have never won the Golden Ball despite his impressive goal-scoring streak in the past.

However, in 2020, he was the outright favourite to win it after an incredible season with Bayern Munich. At the time, the Polish striker had scored 47 goals in 44 games for club and country.

Lewa's incredible performances helped the Bavarians win the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League, putting him in a pole position to win the Ballon d'Or.

However, the awards ceremony was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on football that year. The decision to cancel the award sparked fury from fans, who claimed Lewandowski had been robbed of the prize.

Almost four years later, @centregoals, citing Sport, reports that France Football is actually considering awarding the Poland international the 2020 Ballon d'Or.

The development comes nearly three years after Messi claimed that the former Bayern star deserved the award. The Argentine striker made the confession after winning the 2021 edition.

Change in Ballon d'Or rules

Sports Brief has previously reported that the Ballon d'Or rules were changed in 2021, just after Messi had won his record seventh title.

The award switched to a season-based format rather than the calendar year and the vote was reduced to the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations.
