Fans are up in arms over the Premier League Player of the Season award after a glaring absence among the nominees.

The shortlists for both Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season have been unveiled, featuring four players who appear on both lists.

Arsenal's Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard are considered strong contenders, alongside Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who earned his spot following an impressive season.

Ollie Watkins and Alexander Isak secured their spots on the list thanks to their remarkable goal-scoring performances for Aston Villa and Newcastle, respectively.

The eight-person lineup is rounded out by Liverpool's captain Virgil van Dijk and the Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, both highly favoured contenders for the award, per GOAL.

However, online uproar has ensued as fans argue that a third Manchester City player deserved inclusion.

Spain midfielder Rodri is widely regarded as one of the best in the world in his position and is currently part of a remarkable 71-game unbeaten streak.

City's defeats this season have coincided with his absence from the lineup, highlighting his influence.

In addition to dictating the team's tempo, Rodri has contributed significantly with seven goals and nine assists from midfield.

Fans react to Rodri's omission

Fans flooded social media platforms to voice their discontent regarding Rodri's exclusion.

@Wesdinho_ said:

"The award has lost its value."

@Blacksodje posted:

"He and Foden were City's best players. Haaland has no business bin there."

@delatobxp wrote:

"That’s why I keep on saying media hype is insane, this guy has zero PR, I wonder why he not rated over Haaland."

@DaviesAyo8 added:

"Rodri has been Manchester City most important player for over a year now. Yet stat paddlers are getting the football spotlight."

Another person fumed:

"The disrespect of Rodri is actually a joke."

EPL Player of the Season contenders

Earlier, Sports Brief also analysed Player of the Season contenders for the Premier League.

Palmer and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins are among the leading candidates for the grand prize.
