Football enthusiasts took to social media in outrage after Bayern Munich was deprived of a late equaliser against Real Madrid in perplexing circumstances.

The Bundesliga powerhouse seemed poised for an all-German final at Wembley after Alphonso Davies put them ahead 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

However, a brace from super-sub Joselu flipped the tie's outcome within three minutes.

The tension persisted as Bayern initiated one final attack in the 12th minute of added time and successfully found the back of the net, per the BBC.

A ball soared into the Madrid box and was headed down to centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

However, just as the Dutchman was about to strike, the whistle blew following the raised offside flag, GOAL reported.

Bayern players on the pitch and in the dugout expressed frustration towards the officials, incredulous that play had not been permitted to proceed before undergoing review.

How fans reacted to referee's call

The discontent was not confined to the Bayern staff, as fans vented their frustration online, with @thefutballboy_1 remarking:

"In all honesty, this is not offside, and even if it was, it's a close close call, and the rules say, "Players must keep playing until the attack is over, then check VAR". Bayern got robbed!"

@HLTCO said:

"It’s absolutely bonkers that they’ve blown up and not allowed VAR to determine whether or not that was offside."

@Thomasjrennie wrote:

"Hold on. He’s onside there isn’t he? That’s a balls up there from the linesman. When you think about all the times they play on when you KNOW someone is offside."

Another fan said:

"Champions league is fixed."

Another added:

"That was clearly onside! Why would the referee raise his flag so hastily when there's VAR available? Another UEFA Champions League match seemingly manipulated for Madrid's benefit."

Tuchel slams referees

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Thomas Tuchel expressed his frustration towards referee Szymon Marciniak following Bayern Munich's contentious exit from the Champions League.

After the game, Tuchel, in what was his final Champions League match in charge of Bayern, didn't hold back his displeasure, labelling the situation as an 'absolute disaster'.
