Mamelodi Sundowns have been crowned the DStv Premiership champions for the seventh time in a row after thrashing Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 at the FNB Stadium.

Despite Rulani Mokwena's drastic decision to rest several Sundowns key players due to their Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Stellenbosch, the Brazilians still delivered an excellent performance against the Amakhosi.

The Masandawana won the league with six games to spare as they made amends for their CAF Champions League loss against Esperance of Tunisia the last time out.

Kaizer Chiefs started the game on a bright note, but a red card for Spiwe Given Msimango in the 19th minute changed the direction of the match.

Sundowns could not take advantage of Chiefs being down to 10 men in the remaining minutes of the first half, but seven minutes after the restart, Mokwena's men hit the back of the net.

Tashreeq Matthews scored the first-half goal before Matias Esquivel added the second four minutes later.

Matthews added his second of the night after being teed up by Marcelo Allende in the 82nd minute.

Chiefs pulled one back from the penalty spot through Mduduzi Shabalala in the 85th minute to keep the scores at 3-1.

Late goals from Lucas Ribeiro and Thembinkosi Lorch sealed a 5-1 win for the league leaders, as the Brazilians clinched the South African league title for the seventh consecutive time.

Mokwena sets record straight on Lorch

Sports Brief reported that Mokwena responded to Lorch's playing time claims, which some section of fans believed had been heightened due to their friendship.

The midfielder, who joined Masandawana in January, has faced criticism for his performances, with some fans suggesting he hasn't justified his game time.

The coach brushed off the suggestions, stressing that his focus is on the team's success, not personal relationships.
