Cole Palmer has received support from social media after missing a golden opportunity in Chelsea's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Englishman, who has been Chelsea's standout player this season, squandered a clear chance to put the Blues ahead early in the game at Stamford Bridge.

How Cole Palmer missed an open-goal chance?

In the fourth minute of the London Derby, Nicolas Jackson was through on goal, but his shot was partially saved by Guglielmo Vicario.

Micky van de Ven then made a sensational clearance to prevent the ball from going into the net, as reported by 90Min.

The rebound fell to Palmer, Chelsea's top scorer this season, but he couldn't convert the chance with the goal gaping.

Despite the miss, fans quickly defended the 21-year-old, pointing out the difficulty of the situation and the split-second timing required to react.

"To be fair to him, he probably didn't expect it, and it did come too fast at him. He should score tbf."

@_DeanOfStudent added:

"He didn’t expect that ball, and was a weak foot too."

@chiukwujioke explained:

"The ball was too fast."

@adezvibes concurred with the thoughts of @chiukwujioke:

"The rebound was too fast."

@robertayelekesi joined the bandwagon to defend Palmer:

"We are all watching the game, and we know how the ball got to his leg."

Chelsea deal UCL blow to Tottenham

Sports Brief also reported that Chelsea dealt a significant blow to Tottenham's Champions League aspirations by securing a 2-0 victory against their struggling London rivals on Thursday.

Trevoh Chalobah's first goal since March 2022 gave Chelsea the lead in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

Nicolas Jackson, often criticised, sealed the win with his 14th goal of the season in the closing stages, marking a challenging first year with the Blues.
