Manchester United’s admin had football fans fooled with a cheeky message on April 30 about upcoming ‘changes in management’ at the club.

United is currently in a transitional period, as the club is experiencing wholesale changes to its hierarchy since Jim Ratcliffe bought a stake.

Some fans anticipated a big change at the club: the potential departure of Erik ten Hag, who has come under immense pressure in recent months.

The Dutchman is living on borrowed time and could get dismissed before the start of the 2024/25 campaign if he fails to show signs of improvement in the team in the remaining four matches.

With the Red Devils in seventh place and unable to finish in the top four this season, ten Hag has an uphill task in trying to convince Ratcliffe he is still the right man for the job.

Manchester United release cheeky statement

Due to the current situation at the club, United fans are always on high alert for potential big news about the team.

On Tuesday, April 30, fans were surprised when the club's post on X, formerly Twitter, announced several more management changes at the club.

However, the changes had little to do with ten Hag, instead explaining via the club website that Patrick Stewart, interim Chief Executive Officer, and Cliff Baty, Chief Financial Officer, would leave 'by mutual consent' at the end of the season.

The statement read in part: "Patrick will be replaced as CEO by Jean-Claude Blanc until the arrival of Omar Berrada on 13 July. Cliff Baty will be replaced as CFO by Roger Bell."

On social media, fans’ reactions were mostly similar. A majority initially thought the club had parted ways with Ten Hag and believe the club had deliberately trolled them.

@utdsnook commented:

"You just baited so many people when it’s just an interim CEO."

@HojlundPR was disappointed:

"I thought they sacked ten hag."

@Sam_Lulli wanted to see meaningful changes:

"You guys are firing the wrong people."

@Chafier19 saw the funny side of things:

"Almost jumped out of my seat with excitement thinking finally Ten Hag has been sacked."

Ten Hag’s stance on the future

A 1-1 draw against Burnley in United’s latest game ended their hopes for Champions League qualification, but ten Hag has insisted the club is building for the future.

After that game, he said, per Manchester Evening News, "We have some very young players, and that’s why we built this club back. That takes time, and we build this by bringing in young players."

The Red Devils’ next game is an away trip to Crystal Palace on Monday, May 6.

Ten Hag linked with Ajax move

Sports Brief also previously reported on rumours of ten Hag’s potential return to Ajax, his former club in the Netherlands.

He helped them clinch three league titles and two Dutch Cups, as well as seeing them reach the Champions League semi-finals.
