Manchester United's tumultuous season has seen them fall short of expectations, sitting sixth in the Premier League table.

Despite their hopes for a UEFA Champions League slot dashed, they hold onto the dream of FA Cup success after securing a spot in the final.

However, the season has been tainted by what fans perceive as unjust refereeing decisions, leading to significant setbacks.

While some blame inconsistent performances and managerial decisions, fans point to several controversial refereeing calls that cost them valuable points.

Here are five such instances:

Tottenham 2-0 Manchester United (August 19, 2023)

An early penalty shout for United was denied when Alejandro Garnacho's shot appeared to strike Cristian Romero's arm in the box. Replays were inconclusive, leaving United fans frustrated.

Manchester United 1-3 Brighton (September 16, 2023)

Marcus Rashford's brilliant run and assist for a Rasmus Hojlund goal was controversially ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Footage later emerged suggesting the decision was incorrect, further adding to United's grievances.

Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United (September 3, 2023)

United were denied a penalty for a Gabriel pull on Hojlund, with the referee deeming it insufficient for a foul. Additionally, Erik ten Hag argued that Garnacho's late goal was wrongly disallowed due to an incorrect VAR angle.

Chelsea 4-3 Manchester United (April 4, 2023)

A dramatic late penalty was awarded to Chelsea for a foul by Diogo Dalot on Noni Madueke, which proved decisive in their comeback victory. Despite replays suggesting minimal contact, VAR upheld the decision, leaving United feeling aggrieved.

Manchester United 1-1 Burnley (April 27)

Another late penalty conceded by United, this time for a foul by Andre Onana on Zeki Amdouni, denied them a crucial win. United believe they were denied a possible penalty in the 25th minute when Alejandro Garnacho was brought down inside the box by Sander Berge.

Garnacho was involved in another contentious moment when he received a stamp from Lorenz Assignon just before halftime. Additionally, the winger was fouled by Dara O'Shea, and then the ball struck Vitinho's arm in stoppage time following a shot by Antony.

Ten Hag facing pay cut at Old Trafford

Sports Brief reported that, after a series of unpleasant results, Ten Hag will face a 25% salary cut if he stays at Old Trafford next season.

With no hopes of playing in the Champions League next season, ten Hag, who landed at United in May 2022 from Ajax, will have a difficult time proving to Red Devils's management that he is up to the task of the job.

Despite securing a second consecutive spot in the FA Cup finals after seeing off Championship Coventry in a penalty shoot-out, the performances have not been convincing.
