Mamelodi Sundowns continues to make history in South African football.

The Brazilians are on course to win their seventh league title in a row and their 17th top flight crown overall.

Rulani Mokwena's men need just 12 points from nine games to wrap up the title and could also set more records in the process. Sports Brief checks out what those are.

Four records Sundowns could still break

Longest unbeaten start to a new season

The Pretoria club are one game away from making history in the DStv Premiership.

The current record for the longest unbeaten start to a season sits at 21, something Sundowns have matched already.

Masandawana must avoid defeat against Sekhukhune United to extend their run to 22 and further highlight their dominance.

Of their 21 games to date, Sundowns have won 16 and drawn just five.

Fewest goals conceded by a team

Sundowns are still after one big record held by their rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.

The Amakhosi are in the history books for conceding the least amount of goals in a single season.

The record is currently 11, while the Brazilians have already let in seven.

With nine games to go, Mokwena's side would have to be rock solid at the back to equal or better it.

Most wins in a DStv Premiership season

Having already won 16 games this season, Sundowns need seven more to set a new record.

The current mark in a 30-game season is 22, also set by them, and they now have nine more games to beat that.

News24 reported that they achieved this feat on their way to winning the 2016/16 title.

Most points in a season

The current record, also set by the Brazilians, is 71 points.

With Sundowns on 53 points and 27 still left to play for, they could easily wipe out that total and set a new one.

They were on course to beat it last year but suffered too many draws at the end and finished on 70.

Going a whole season without losing

Sundowns are nine games away from achieving one of the most impressive streaks in PSL history.

The Brazilians have not lost a league game in 45, but keeping it up for nine more will earn them the title of invincibles.

Masandawana came close to achieving that feat in the 2020/21 season, but a 2-1 defeat to Chiefs ended those hopes, Chiefs' website noted.

It was their only loss that season, and it also set the record for the fewest games lost during a 30-game campaign.

Sundowns boss provides update on star midfielder

Sports Brief has also reported on Rulani Mokwena, Sundowns coach, discussing Teboho Mokoena's fitness after the midfielder missed an important game.

The Bafana Bafana star was absent for the CAF Champions League semi-final first-leg tie against Esperance de Tunis on April 20, hosted at Loftus Versfeld.
