Victor Osimhen and Napoli are having a dreadful season, considering they were Serie A champions last season.

The Nigerian international led the club to their first league title in 33 years, drawing Diego Maradona comparisons.

Former Napoli star, Antonio Floro Flores, has urged fans and pundits to stop getting attached to players and scale back comparisons to club legends from decades ago, like Maradona.

Osimhen broke several records in the 2022/23 season at the club. Apart from winning the league title, he became the first African to win the Serie A Golden Boot.

His accomplishments in Italy saw him named the 2023 African Footballer of the Year. This season, his performances have drastically dropped.

For instance, last season, he scored 31 goals in all competitions. He has managed 15 in this campaign, and they find themselves eighth in the table. Inter Milan won the title on Monday, April 22.

Former Napoli star on hype

Flores says balance is needed when discussing players like Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the club's most important players.

"Napoli, at this moment, still needs the support of the fans. The shirt always counts and counts, perhaps in the future we should avoid becoming too attached to some players," via All Nigerian Soccer.
"After the scudetto we were quick to compare Kvara to Maradona and Osimhen to Van Basten... Balance is always needed."

The Super Eagles striker will likely leave the club at the end of the season unless they strengthen their squad.

Osimhen matches Maradona's record

Osimhen recently bagged a hat-trick against Sassuolo, as they registered an emphatic 6-1 victory.

The Super Eagles star has now scored at least 10 Serie A goals in four straight seasons. Since joining Napoli in 2020 from Lille, Osimhen has scored 10, 14, 26, and 13 goals in the last four league campaigns.

By doing so, Osimhen joined Maradona (1984-85 to 1987-88) and Attila Sallustro (1929-30 to 1932-33) on that exclusive list, as Sports Brief reported earlier.
