Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, Granit Xhaka, has opened up after bowing to greet Victor Boniface's grandmother following her trip to Germany in December.

Boniface's grandmother was at the BayArena to watch her grandson in the Bundesliga game between the new German champions and Borussia Dortmund.

The Nigeria forward scored to salvage a point for Bayer Leverkusen in the epic encounter.

After the game, the Super Eagles attacker introduced his grandmother to some of his teammates but it was the gesture of Xhaka that got the attention of many especially Africans.

In a video that went viral around that time, the Switzerland international bowed to greet her, a sign of respect for the elderly.

According to Xhaka, he grew up around many Africans in Basel, where he learned a lot about the culture.

"I grew up with a lot of African people. I have one of my best friends whom I grew up with, he is from Ghana, from Togo. In Basel, we have a lot of Africans as well. I love the culture. I love the mentality, I love how kind they are to other people. For me it's the same, we grew up like this with a lot of respect," he told Oma Sports TV.
"Boni is a great guy but as well a great family. This football club is more than special," he added.

Dortmund wrapped up the title last week after mauling Werder Bremen 5-0 at the BayArena, with both Boniface and Xhaka on target, as reported by Sky Sports.

Leverkusen will face Dortmund on Sunday with the hopes of extending their unbeaten run to 45 matches.

Boniface's grandmother meets Leverkusen stars

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface introduced his grandmother to his Bayer Leverkusen teammates after their game against Borussia Dortmund in December.

Boniface scored as Bayer Leverkusen drew with Dortmund at home in the first round of the league.

Leverkusen has since extended their unbeaten run as they won their first-ever league title last week after beating Werder Bremen.
