In a video that went viral around that time, the Switzerland international bowed to greet her, a sign of respect for the elderly.
According to Xhaka, he grew up around many Africans in Basel, where he learned a lot about the culture.
"I grew up with a lot of African people. I have one of my best friends whom I grew up with, he is from Ghana, from Togo. In Basel, we have a lot of Africans as well. I love the culture. I love the mentality, I love how kind they are to other people. For me it's the same, we grew up like this with a lot of respect," he told Oma Sports TV.
"Boni is a great guy but as well a great family. This football club is more than special," he added.
Dortmund wrapped up the title last week after mauling Werder Bremen 5-0 at the BayArena, with both Boniface and Xhaka on target, as reported by Sky Sports.
