Former Senegal international, Habib Beye, has led French club Red Star FC to Ligue 2 promotion after a remarkable run in the Nacional League.

Red Star returns to Ligue 2 after five years in the Nacional Championnat, with four games to end the campaign.

Despite defeat to Dijon last Friday, it was enough for the league leaders to gain promotion as they hold a healthy ten-point lead at the top of the table.

Beye, who played for Senegal between 2001 to 2008, started his coaching career in 2021 with Red Star as an assistant before later taking over as the main manager.

"It's a great moment! [...] The players must understand that they have achieved something extraordinary and that they must give themselves the means to reach a very high level by continuing to work because we're not going to let them go until May 18," he said after the promotion was confirmed, as spotted on the club social media page.

Red Star will also return to their main grounds, Stade Bauer for the first time in 26 years in Ligue 1, per the club's website.

Meanwhile, Beye is already attracting interest from Ligue 1 clubs after coming close to joining Lyon following the departure of Fabio Grosso.

"You know there was Lyon, it was clear and established. The club refused and I couldn't go against that. Lyon, it wasn't a rumor, it was something that could be done if I had expressed the wish to be able to leave. My contract is respected," said Beye.
