The Super Eagles of Nigeria remain without a coach ahead of the crunch 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series.

Former manager, Jose Peseiro, announced his surprise departure from the Nigerian team weeks after successfully leading them to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

In response to this sudden departure, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have sprung into action to secure a suitable replacement for the Portuguese manager.

However, as fans' impatience mounts amidst the prolonged recruitment process, Nigeria's sports minister, John Enoh, has provided an update on the NFF's progress in appointing the next leader for the Super Eagles.

Sports minister speaks on Super Eagles job

During an interview with the media outlet Channels Sports, the 57-year-old minister provided an update on the timeline for completing the recruitment process.

"The responsibility of appointing a coach for the Super Eagles lies with the NFF, and I have been in touch with them," he stated.
"What I can assure is that a new Super Eagles coach will be announced in the next two weeks. The NFF are aware of what Nigeria lost by missing out on the last World Cup, and they are working hard. We are in constant touch."

The sports minister's words have elicited mixed reactions among fans, with many expressing their dissatisfaction on social media regarding the lengthy timeline for the appointment of the new manager.

It is worth noting that the Super Eagles are scheduled to face their fierce rivals, South Africa, in the first leg of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series on June 5.

NFF excludes Amunike from shortlist

In a recent report, Sports Brief disclosed that the NFF has omitted Emmanuel Amunike from the final shortlist for the Super Eagles coaching vacancy.

Initially considered a favourite for the role, the 53-year-old's exclusion marks a significant shift in the selection process.
