Barcelona's Top 5 Champions League heartbreaks

1. Liverpool (2018-19 semi-finals)

When it comes to Champions League heartbreaks, nothing will top Barcelona's collapse in the 2018-19 semi-finals.

The Spanish giants looked like they were on their way to another finals appearance after beating Liverpool 3-0 in the first leg at Camp Nou.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring in that contest before Lionel Messi sealed the win with a brace in the second half.

Unfortunately, they weren't able to hold on to that advantage as Liverpool launched a furious fightback in the return leg at Anfield, per the BBC.

Divock Orogi and Georginio Wijnaldum each scored braces to lead the Reds to a 4-0 victory in the second leg and hand Barcelona a gut-wrenching 4-3 aggregate loss.

2. Roma (2017-18 quarter-finals)

Barcelona also suffered a heartbreaking collapse in the Champions League one year before their loss to Liverpool.

A semis spot looked to be a foregone conclusion for Barca after they defeated Roma 4-1 in the first leg of their 2017-18 quarter-final clash.

That advantage didn't hold, though, as Roma recorded a comeback for the ages in the return leg at Stadio Olimpico.

Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi, and Kostas Manolas scored the goals in Roma's 3-0 win, which helped the Italians tie the aggregate score at 4-4.

Roma qualified for the semis via the away goals rule, with Dzeko's strike at Camp Nou proving to be the difference in the tie.

3. Bayern Munich (2012-13 semi-finals)

Barcelona experienced utter humiliation when they faced Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League.

The German giants dismantled Barca 4-0 in the first leg at Allianz Arena, with Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez, and Arjen Robben scoring the goals.

They continued their dominance in the second leg at Camp Nou, beating Barcelona 3-0 to complete the 7-0 aggregate win.

4. Bayern Munich (2019-20 quarter-finals)

The quarter-final showdown between Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League became a knockout match due to the COVID pandemic.

The contest turned out to be a disaster for the Spanish giants as they suffered an embarrassing 8-2 loss to Bayern. It was the first time since the 1946 Copa del Generalisimo that Barca conceded eight goals in a match.

Six different players scored against Barcelona in the rout, including Muller and Philippe Coutinho, who each netted braces.

5. PSG (2023-24 quarter-finals)

Barcelona felt confident heading into the second leg of their 2023-24 quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

They went back home to Catalonia with a 3-2 advantage in the tie after Andreas Christensen scored a late match-winner for Barca in the first leg.

Raphinha doubled Barcelona's aggregate lead early in the second leg with a strike in the 12th minute. Momentum swung in PSG's favour, however, when Ronald Araujo was sent off in the 29th minute, per The Guardian.

The French club took full advantage, scoring four unanswered goals to win 6-4 on aggregate. Kylian Mbappe sealed the victory for the visitors, scoring a brace in the second half.

Referee blamed for Barcelona's loss

Sports Brief recently reported on Xavi blaming the referee for Barcelona's early exit in the UEFA Champions League.

Istvan Kovacs gave Araujo his marching orders in the 29th minute after the Barcelona player fouled Bradley Barcola.

That decision changed the complexion of the match, with PSG outscoring Barca 4-0 after the red card was displayed.
