Guinea captain, Naby Keita, has been punished by German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen following his conduct before the game against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

The former Liverpool midfielder decided not to travel with the team to the BayArena after he was told he would not be starting against Leverkusen.

Keita has been suspended until the end of the season and will not take part in any senior team activity.

"Werder Bremen officials have suspended Naby Keita until the end of the season. In addition, the Green-Whites have imposed a significant fine on the midfielder. From now on, the 29-year-old will neither train with the team nor be in the professional dressing room," a statement on the club's official website read.

Meanwhile, the club's Managing Director, Clemens Fritz insists the player let the club down with his behaviour.

“Naby’s behaviour cannot be tolerated for us as a club. With this action, he let his team down in a tense sporting and personnel situation and placed himself above the team. We can't allow that," he said.
"At this stage of the season, we need full focus on the remaining games and a team that is very close together. There was therefore no alternative to our measures,” he added.

The Green and Whites were battered by the new German champions 5-0 on Sunday.

With five games remaining, Werder Bremen will be hoping to have a good finish to the campaign.

Keita has made only five appearances for the club this season, per Transfermarkt.

Keita refuses to travel with Werder Bremen

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Liverpool midfielder, Naby Keita refused to travel with Werder Bremen for the Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Guinea international decided to abandon the trip after he was informed he would not be starting the game.

The Green and Whites suffered a 5-0 defeat at the Bay Arena following a devastating display by the hosts.
