Former Liverpool midfielder, Naby Keita could face sanctions from Werder Bremen after refusing to travel with the team to the Bay Arena for the Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Guinea captain decided to abandon the trip after he was informed he would not be starting the game at Leverkusen on Sunday.

Keita and his agent are expected to meet the officials of the club on Monday, where a decision could be taken for withdrawing from the squad.

According to Werder Bremen's Managing Director, Clemens Fritz, the player will face consequences for his action.

"After Naby found out yesterday that he would not be playing from the start, he decided not to get on the bus but to go home. We will talk to him and his agent tomorrow about the consequences and how to proceed," he said in a statement on the club's social media pages.

The Guinea international joined Werder Bremen last summer on a free transfer from English giants Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup.

Since joining the German outfit, he has made only five Bundesliga appearances, per Transfermarkt.

Naby Keita joins Werder Bremen

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Guinea captain, Naby Keita returned to Germany after signing for Werder Bremen following his departure from English giants Liverpool.

The midfielder joins the Bundesliga outfit on a free transfer.

Before moving to England, Keita enjoyed a successful stint in the German league, helping RB Leipzig qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Keita clashes with Ismail Jakobs

Sports Brief also reported that ex-Liverpool star Naby Keita clashed with Ismail Jakobs at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, with Sadio Mane playing a peacemaker role.

Teranga Lions wing-back, Jacobs and Guinea's captain, Keita clashed near the corner flag during their AFCON clash, leading to the referee cautioning both players.

The moment cast an unfavourable light on what was otherwise an exciting game between the two West African rivals at the continental competition in Cote d'Ivoire.
