  • SuperSport United lost 4-0 to Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal
  • Head coach Gavin Hunt expressed his disappointment at his heaviest cup defeat
  • The Stellies' strategic play and clinical finishing led to a dominant performance

SuperSport United suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat against Stellenbosch FC in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal on Saturday, April 13, marking the club's heaviest loss in over a decade.

Despite previous victories over the Stellies in the league, Matsatsantsa struggled to secure a foothold in the game played at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Coach Gavin Hunt expressed dismay at the outcome, the heaviest cup defeat he has experienced throughout his esteemed career.

In a press conference, Hunt attributed the defeat to challenges with adapting to the playing conditions, acknowledging the team's struggle to maintain possession and control the game.

“No, I don’t think so not in the cup, [my biggest] defeat in 30 years in the cup, not easy to take, but ja,” he said as reported by iDiski Times.

The Swanky Boys' attempts to overturn the scoreline proved futile as The Maroons capitalized on critical moments to secure a convincing victory.

As reported by SuperSport, their clinical performance saw them dominate the match, exploiting opportunities to score and effectively managing the game until the final whistle.

Despite SuperSport's efforts to regain momentum, Steve Barker's men's strategic play and efficient attacks ultimately secured their spot in the semi-finals.

With their cup aspirations dashed, they now shift their focus to finishing the season strongly in the Premier Soccer League, aiming for a return to continental football through league standings.

They are currently third in the DSTv premiership standings with 34 points after 22 games.

Hunt opens up on talks with Hugo Broos

Sports Brief reported that Hunt disclosed his conversation with Bafana boss, Hugo Broos, just before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Broos had attempted to establish connections with coaches in the DSTv Premiership to gain insights into local players but faced initial challenges in receiving responses.

However, recent interactions suggest that the Belgian's efforts to engage with local coaches are improving gradually.
