  • Inter Miami were taught bitter football lessons against Mexican side Monterrey
  • Lionel Messi's club were eliminated from the Champions Cup on Wednesday
  • Fans of Monterrey were spotted dancing on Messi's shirt after the match

Lionel Messi made his comeback to the starting lineup for Inter Miami as they took on Monterrey FC in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup 2024 quarterfinal.

Brandon Vazquez, German Berterame, and Jesus Gallardo's goals secured a well-deserved 3-1 victory for the Liga MX side on the night, propelling them to the semi-finals where they will face MLS champions, Columbus Crew.

Trailing 2-1 after last week's first leg in Florida, Inter Miami recalled Argentine superstar Messi to their starting line-up for the first time since his near-month-long injury absence.

But the 36-year-old's return did not go as anticipated for Inter Miami.

Although the Argentine star managed to notch an assist during the match, it proved insufficient as Messi and Inter Miami suffered a humbling defeat with an aggregate scoreline of 5-2.

During the game, Mexican fans aimed their hostility at the Argentine icon, booing every time he touched the ball.

Their actions didn't end there; they celebrated their victory by dancing on Messi's shirt, capturing the moment on video, which quickly went viral on TikTok.

Inter Miami's exit from the Champions Cup also signifies their absence from a berth in the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup set for 2025 in the United States.

Next for the Herons is a trip to Kansas to face Sporting KC in the league as they continue their quest for a first MLS playoff in their history.

Messi taunted with Ronaldo chants

Sports Brief has also reported that Messi was taunted by Cristiano Ronaldo's chants during Inter Miami's game against Monterrey.

The Argentine star made his first start since returning from injury. His only goal involvement came late in the game, with the side already trailing 5-1 on aggregate.

Ronaldo has also been subjected to similar treatment in the Middle East.
