  • Liverpool were outclassed and beaten 3-0 at Anfield by Atalanta
  • It was Jurgen Klopp's fifth home loss in Europe as Reds coach
  • They face a difficult but not impossible second leg in Bergamo

Liverpool suffered an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat to Italian club Atalanta in the first leg of the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League quarter-final, setting up a difficult second leg in Italy.

Former Premier League flop, Gianluca Scamacca, scored a brace and former Chelsea star Mario Pasalic scored a third to inflict the first defeat at home in 14 months on Liverpool.

The defeat was also the fifth at Anfield in European competitions for Jurgen Klopp in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

Sports Brief looks at the four managers who have defeated the Reds at Anfield under the German.

4 managers who won UEFA games at Anfield

1. Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-2 in Merseyside in March 2020, the last match before COVID-19 lockdown. Per Goal, it was the club's first defeat at home in six years, the first under the German manager. They were eliminated from the UCL 3-2 on aggregate.

2. Simone Inzaghi

Simone Inzaghi's Inter Milan beat Klopp's men 1-0 at Anfield in the Round of 16 second leg of the 2021/22 UCL thanks to Lautaro Martinez's second-half strike, but it was not enough as they had already lost the first leg at the San Siro 2-0.

3. Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid proved to Liverpool that their 2022 UCL final win in Paris was not a fluke. They met in the following season's Round of 16, and the Spanish club won 5-2 in England. Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema scored two goals each.

4. Gian Piero Gasperini

Per Squawka, Gasperini's Atalanta are the first to win twice at Anfield, both games without conceding a goal. The first time was in the Champions League group stage match in November 2020, a 2-0 win with goals from Robin Gosen and Josip Ilicic. They repeated the feat last night in the Europa League.

Klopp's greatest rivals

Sports Brief previously analysed Pep Guardiola as Klopp's greatest rival, having faced the Spaniard and beaten him more times than any other coach in his career.

The two have faced off 29 times, with the German winning 11 of those games. The Manchester City boss admitted he will be relieved when his rival leaves Liverpool.
