  • Victor Osimhen is having a forgettable 2023/24 season at Napoli
  • The Nigerian will likely not defend the Golden Boot he won last year
  • Several African footballers have scored more goals than the striker

Victor Osimhen is having a poor season at Napoli.

The Nigerian striker had a historic 2022/23 season at the Italian club, but his performances this season have not lived up to his sky-high standards.

The 25-year-old won the African Footballer of the Year award, Serie A, and Serie A Golden Boot last year.

Osimhen's numbers have dipped significantly, and he is getting outscored by several African footballers plying their trade in Europe.

Last season, the Super Eagles superstar scored 31 goals in 39 appearances, including 26 in the league, which helped Napoli lift the Serie A for the first time in 33 years.

At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he scored once as Nigeria lost in the final to Ivory Coast.

He scored five goals in three matches after the tournament but has not scored since Napoli's 6-1 win over Sassuolo on February 28. So far this season, Osimhen has bagged 13 goals in 25 games in all competitions.

Furthermore, his team is having a poor title defence. They find themselves eighth in the table with 45 points after 30 games. They have also had three coaches this season alone. Here are some African footballers in Europe who have scored more than the Nigerian star.

African players outscoring Osimhen in Europe

Serhou Guirassy

The Stuttgart striker is having a historic season in Germany. He has scored 23 Bundesliga goals this season. Only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (31) has scored more goals than the Guinean. He has also scored 25 goals in all competitions.

Mohamed Salah

The Liverpool winger is having another incredible season in the Premier League. He has scored 16 goals in England and 22 in all competitions. The Egyptian has been plagued by injuries this season, but is playing a vital role in Liverpool's title charge.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Gabon legend is experiencing some sort of a renaissance. After a forgettable spell at Chelsea, he joined Olympique Marseille and has been thriving since. The former Barcelona striker has 23 goals and five assists in 40 matches in the 2023/24 season.

Cyriel Dessers

The Rangers striker has bagged 17 goals in 44 appearances this season. Only three players have scored more goals in the Scottish Premiership than Dessers.

Mohammed Kudus

The 23-year-old Ghanaian forward is one of the best African players in the Premier League this season. The West Ham star has scored 16 goals in 39 appearances this campaign.

Abdallah Sima

The Senegalese winger has also scored more goals than Osimhen in Europe this season. The Rangers star has bagged 15 goals in 34 appearances this term.

Youssef En-Nesyri

The Moroccan is in his fifth season at Sevilla. He has scored 14 goals in 33 appearances for the Spanish club. No African player has scored more goals than him in Spain.

Victor Boniface

The Nigerian striker made his first appearance in 2024 on Wednesday night for Bayer Leverkusen. Boniface has scored 16 goals in 24 appearances this campaign. His team is inching closer to winning their first-ever Bundesliga title.

Mame Thiam

The Senegalese winger has scored 14 goals for Pendikspor in 30 Turkish Super Lig matches this term.

Osimhen named highest-paid player in Serie A

Sports Brief also previously reported on Osimhen being named Serie A's highest-paid footballer, reportedly earning a monthly salary of £1.29 million.

Reigning Serie A champions Napoli signed the Super Eagles star for around €75mil, and he led them to last season's league title.
