  • The winger joined Manchester City in 2021 from West Midlands club Aston Villa
  • He recently returned to the squad after weeks out with a stubborn groin injury

Jack Grealish recently revealed his mother struggles to understand why he always receives a frosty reception from away fans in the Premier League.

After becoming the most expensive British player in 2021 following his £100million move from Aston Villa to Manchester City, Grealish instantly became an enemy of the West Midlands club.

At City, he enjoyed success in his first two seasons, but things have been different in 2023/24 as he has consistently battled injuries.

He came on and played for 29 minutes in his side’s most recent game, a 0-0 draw against Arsenal.

While there is no question the 28-year-old is adored by fans at the Etihad Stadium, the same cannot be said about other grounds.

In fact, Grealish is subjected to so much jeering from opposition fans that his own mother has taken notice.

"I always think about it. I always wonder, 'Why do they boo me?' - and my mum always asks me about it as well,” the former Villa man told City magazine, per talkSPORT.

Grealish adds that he is also lost for answers on the issue, but tries to look at it from a positive perspective

"But I don't actually know why it happens. At every single away ground I go to now, I get booed and I'm not entirely sure why it is - I just have to try and take it as a positive or a compliment."

Grealish to face his former side

City’s next Premier League game is a home fixture against Grealish’s former team Aston Villa.

The winger is likely to feature in that game as Pep Guardiola’s side looks to bounce back from the drab draw against Arsenal.

While the result of that game is uncertain, one can bet the away fans will not be too kind to their former superstar.

Guardiola scolds Grealish

Sports Brief also reported on the criticism Pep Guardiola attracted after appearing to reprimand Grealish in the full glare of cameras.

The gaffer lectured his winger immediately after the full time whistle on Sunday, March 31.

He sensationally admitted later that his antics in front of the camera were for “his ego”.
