  • Chuba Akpom scored a brace for Ajax against PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie
  • The Nigerian, however, was disappointed at missing out on a hat-trick
  • The 28-year-old has proven his goal-scoring ability with 13 this season

Chuba Akpom has taken a moment to assess his performance following Ajax's 3-1 victory over PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie.

The forward, a product of the Hale End Academy, netted twice, boosting the team's aspirations for the European play-off spots.

It marked the Anglo-Nigerian's second instance of scoring two goals in a league fixture since his transfer to the Netherlands, with his initial feat achieved against Heerenveen last November.

Despite his commendable performance, the forward was disappointed at falling short of securing a hat-trick.

"I'm happy with my two goals, but I wanted to score a hat-trick today. I'm disappointed about that. I live by creating chances and scoring goals. That is what I dream of and work hard for every day," he explained at the post-match press conference, as quoted by AT5.

Akpom's inclusion in the starting lineup was attributed to Brian Brobbey's injury, granting him a chance to shine. Despite playing second fiddle to the Dutch youngster for much of the season, the 28-year-old has showcased his proficiency by scoring double-digit goals, tallying 13 across various competitions.

In light of his absence from the Super Eagles squad, he spent the international break with his family in London. Despite his allegiance to Nigeria, he has not received a call-up since 2019, missing out on the upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

“I'm going back to London and spending time with my family because it's been difficult for us all. We need to calm down mentally and clear our heads so that we can end the season on a positive note,” he said, as quoted by Ajax Life.

Akpom nets brace against Reading

Sports Brief on Saturday, March 4, 2023, reported that Akpom scored a brace for Middlesbrough against visiting Reading in a Championship battle.

He was in excellent form at the time, with many fans even engaging in discussions about him playing in the Premier League.

Fans believed the forward should play in England's top flight, not in the second tier.
