  • Thamsanqa Gabuza is now a free man after court charges against him were dropped
  • The former Bafana striker made six court appearances in a property damage case
  • The case stemmed from an incident where he damaged his ex-girlfriend's belongings

Former Bafana Bafana striker, Thamsanqa Gabuza, has been cleared of all charges in a case of alleged malicious damage to property.

The legal saga, which saw Gabuza make six appearances in court, concluded on Thursday, March 28, with the withdrawal of charges.

The incident, which drew attention in November last year, involved the TS Galaxy forward voluntarily surrendering to authorities after being accused of causing damages amounting to R50,000.

His initial court appearance on November 22, 2023, led to him being granted R3,000 bail. However, subsequent missed court appearances in January prompted the issuance of an arrest warrant, which was later rescinded after Gabuza provided a doctor's note to the court in February, as reported by Sunday World.

Details on Gabuza's case settlement

According to police reports, the altercation stemmed from a visit Gabuza made to his ex-girlfriend, Zikhona Zode, on November 11, 2023. Allegedly seeking intimacy, his advances were reportedly rebuffed, leading to a confrontation in which Gabuza purportedly damaged Zode's iPhone (valued at R20,000) and HP laptop (valued at R30,000) in her Sandton residence.

Following mediation outside of court, Gabuza and Zode reached an agreement on March 28, resulting in the withdrawal of the case, as reported by The South African.

This isn't Gabuza's first legal entanglement. In 2017, he was arrested for gender-based violence following allegations made by his then-girlfriend, Boitshoko Tala. Tala accused him of assault and confiscating belongings totalling around R40,000.

Based on stats released by the South African Police Service, a total of 13,090 sexual offences were reported between July and September last year.

Of those, 2,620 offences were committed in the province of Gauteng alone.
