  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria fell to a defeat against Mali’s Les Aigles
  • Forward, Cyriel Dessers, missed a clear-cut chance to level the tie
  • Nigerian fans have aired their take on the miss by the 29-year-old

The Super Eagles fell to a lacklustre defeat against West African neighbours, Mali, in the final fixture of the March International window.

The clash, held at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco, witnessed Coach Eric Chelle's side record their first victory against Nigeria in over 48 years.

However, while Nigerians have been left to rue their missed opportunities and the overall underwhelming performance of the Super Eagles, one moment continues to play in the minds of many fans of the team, which was the 64th-minute miss of Cyriel Dessers in the clash.

As captured in the video shared on social media by All Things Super Eagles, the Rangers forward was played through on goal by Kelechi Iheanacho following a counterattack by the Nigerian team.

The 29-year-old, who has often shown his deftness in front of goal, was largely believed by most to find the back of the net. However, to the surprise of many, Dessers shot the ball over the goal.

Dessers miss, which appeared to be a perfect opportunity for Nigeria to level the tie on the night, seems not to have gone down well with many fans of the Super Eagles, and a host of them have taken to social media to air their take on the miss.

Fans react to Dessers' miss

@Jai69508496 expressed his expectation from the forward, commenting,

"Fully expected him to fake a shot about 40 times, then blaze it over the bar, but at least he did the second part."

@DjcelebO lamented,

"Look, man, you can't miss this."

@CallanGreig3 shared his thoughts, stating,

"If the defenders played in Scotland, they wouldn't have tracked back because they knew the stewards would have to get it from row Z."

@bcamarsha11 also wrote,

"I have genuinely never seen a footballer so unbelievably awful in one-on-one situations. Every. Single. Time."

@MIDROAD19806, who couldn’t believe his eyes, posted,

"How is this boy a striker?"

It should be noted that Dessers only just received a recall to the Super Eagles setup, but it has to be acknowledged that the forward has not done his chances of earning a recall any good.

Finidi explains why Nigeria lost

In another report, Sports Brief stated that Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, explained why Nigeria lost against Mali.

The 52-year-old attributed his team's defeat to injuries to key strikers, which affected their approach on the night.
