  • Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman were on target in the match
  • The Rangers star appeared to aim a jibe at former coach, Jose Peseiro

Nigeria defeated bitter rivals, Ghana, to secure their first win since losing the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February.

Goals from Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman were enough to secure a 2-1 win after Jordan Ayew's late consolation.

Dessers was delighted with the goal and how the Super Eagles approached the game.

Under former coach, Jose Peseiro, Nigeria employed a defensive style, which nearly worked to perfection at the 2023 AFCON, per the BBC.

Their only defeat in Ivory Coast came in the final after a series of brave performances. They conceded four goals en route to the final when the tactic backfired against the hosts.

However, some fans were unimpressed with how they played. Against Ghana, Dessers said they wanted to be more attacking and not defensive like they did under Peseiro.

Peseiro's assistant, Finidi George, is currently in charge of the team, and some have backed him to take over the role permanently.

"Before the game, we had a meeting, and [Finidi] wanted us to press and be more aggressive, and I think we did that, especially in the first half. We did it very [well] and then you see, we got chances out of this, and it gives confidence to the team that we can attack more, create more chances, and that is a good thing. I think this is the way the Super Eagles should play," he said via Own Goal Nigeria.

The Super Eagles face Mali later this week, and they are looking to make it two wins out of two under the interim manager.

Dessers scores in Nigeria vs Ghana

Sports Brief also recently reported on Dessers scoring for Nigeria in their massive 2-1 win over West African rivals, Ghana, on Friday, Match 22.

He buried the penalty after Black Stars' Jerome Opoku handled the ball in the box as his nation registered their first win over Ghana in 18 years.

Iheanacho backs Finidi George

Sports Brief also reported on Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, expressing his support for Finidi after their win over Ghana.

The former Manchester City man believes the 1994 AFCON winner deserves to be appointed as the Super Eagles' full-time coach.
