Former Leeds United forward Max Gradel has decided to call time off international duty after leading Ivory Coast to their second Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2023.

Gradel was part of the Elephants' squad that won the African championship in 2015 and was one of the oldest players at the 34th edition when Ivory Coast hosted.

The captain of the Elephants believes it is time to leave the international football scene in order to make way for the young Ivorian footballers.

Ahead of Ivory Coast's friendly game against Benin Republic, the 36-year-old confirmed he would be retiring.

"I have devoted almost 14 years of my international career to my country. It is time that I think of myself," he said.

The former Bournemouth forward made his debut for Ivory Coast in 2011 and played in 112 games for the Elephants, scoring 17 goals and winning two AFCON titles while playing in three finals.

Gradel's retirement announcement drew reactions from fans on the social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter).

Gradel visits mother of young Ivorian fan

Sports Brief previously reported that Gradel paid a visit to the mother of a fan who passed away following the defeat to Equatorial Guinea during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The host nation were battered in the final Group A game 4-0 and were on the brink of elimination at the tournament on home soil.

In an emotional video posted on social media, Gradel visited the mother of the young fan to pay tribute to the family following their AFCON triumph.
