Ivory Coast forward Max-Alain Gradel paid a visit to the mother of a fan who passed away following the defeat to Equatorial Guinea during the Africa Cup of Nations.

The host nation were battered in the final Group A game 4-0 and were on the brink of elimination at the tournament on home soil.

However, they were miraculously handed a lifeline after Morocco defeated Zambia to keep them in the competition as one of the best third-placed teams.

Ivory Coast went on to defy all odds by winning the competition after beating Nigeria in the final last Sunday.

Meanwhile, it was too late for a young fan who reportedly passed on moments after the defeat to the Nzalang Nacional in Ebimpe.

In an emotional video posted on social media, Gradel, the vice-captain of the national team visited the mother of the young fan to pay tribute to the family following their AFCON triumph.

The former AFC Bournemouth attacker has pledged to support the family in their difficult time.

Gradel starred for Ivory Coast in the tournament, winning his second AFCON title with the Elephants, as reported by Bournemouth Echo.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the President of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara has rewarded players of the national team for winning the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil.

The Elephants went from the brink of getting eliminated to beating Nigeria in the final to win the trophy for the third time.

On Sunday, the hosts showed incredible fighting spirit, which has embodied their tournament, after coming from a goal down to beat the Super Eagles.

Sports Brief also reported that Sebastien Haller was the hero after netting the winner as Ivory Coast came from a goal down to beat Nigeria in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles took the lead before half-time through William Troost-Ekong, but Franck Kessie levelled after the break before Haller finished off the game in style.

The host nation dominated the early exchanges with the Brighton forward coming close after meeting a cross from the left sent on by the lively Simon Adingra.
