  • Arsenal face a testing run of fixtures in April as they battle for the Premier League title
  • The Gunners’ progression in the Champions League could work against them
  • Mikel Arteta’s side could play up to 10 competitive games in one month

Arsenal are set to get tested to their limits in the month of April as the Gunners could play 10 matches in the space of one month.

Mikel Arteta’s side are top of the Premier League table, holding a delicate one-point lead over Liverpool and Manchester City.

Their last game in March was a penalty shootout win over FC Porto in the Champions League last 16, which set up a quarter-final tie against familiar foes Bayern Munich.

Since the Porto game, Arsenal will go 19 days without football action before facing Manchester City in a potential title decider on March 31.

Premier League fixture ammendments

On Saturday, March 23, the Premier League announced key changes to the dates of some matches, with Arsenal among the parties set to be affected.

The Gunners’ fixture schedule is a bit complicated because of their Champions League commitments, and this could spell doom for Mikel Arteta, whose side faces a potential fixture pile-up, especially towards the end of April.

Arsenal's April schedule

On April 20, the North Londoners will travel to the Molineaux to face Wolves, in a game that will come just three days after a trip to Bayern Munich, as reported on the club’s website.

The Bayen game will be followed by a crunch clash against Chelsea on April 23. That game takes place on a Tuesday due to Chelsea’s participation in the FA Cup semi-final.

On April 28, the Gunners are scheduled to face Tottenham in a North London derby, but that match could be moved to April 27 if Arsenal advance to the Champions League semis, which will take place on April 30.

If this were to happen the Gunners would have to play at least 10 games in the month of April.

What about Man City and Liverpool?

The other two title contenders, Manchester City and Liverpool, also do not have it easy as they will play at least nine matches in April.

The Cityzens are still in the FA Cup, while Liverpool are battling for the Europa League and Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s side also faces the prospect of a Champions League tie on April 30 should his side knock out Real Madrid.

Arsenal thrashed in secret friendly

Elsewhere, Sports Brief also reported on how Arsenal lost 4-0 to QPR in a secret friendly on Thursday, March 21.

It was a game that marked the return of Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who played for some minutes in the first half.

The game was largely played by Arsenal’s U21 team as the rest of the senior players represented their countries during the international break.
