  • Finidi George has been named the temporary manager of the Super Eagles
  • The ex-Nigeria winger will lead the Super Eagles against Ghana and Mali
  • Finidi is among the coaches being considered for the Nigeria national team

Finidi George is set to face the perfect audition for the Super Eagles job when he takes charge of the team for Nigeria’s upcoming friendly games against Ghana and Mali.

The three-time African champions are back on the field for the first time since losing the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final 2-1 to Ivory Coast with former manager Jose Peseiro.

According to GOAL, the Nigeria Football Federation has named Finidi as the caretaker coach for the March international friendlies after parting ways with Peseiro when his contract expired in February.

The NFF has reportedly received over 400 applications for the vacant Super Eagles job and it is believed the former Nigeria winger is among the coaches who have applied to become Nigeria’s next head coach.

Here, Sports Brief, alongside Pulse Sports, highlights three important things Finidi must do in the friendly game against Ghana to be given the Super Eagles' permanent job.

How Finidi can keep Super Eagles job

1. Avoid losing to rivals Ghana

Nigeria’s rivalry with Ghana is one not to be underestimated by Finidi despite the fact the clash against the Black Stars is only an international friendly game.

There is nothing like a friendly between Nigeria and Ghana since the loser will be the brunt of social media jokes, which Nigerians do not want.

A loss to the Black Stars will not be forgiven by Nigerians and will also not convince the NFF that Finidi is the right man for the Super Eagles job.

2. Bring a new exciting identity

If Finidi is to keep the Super Eagles job permanently, then the Enyimba coach needs to make the national team exciting to watch again.

The Nigerian team were labelled a defensive team under former coach Peseiro during the 2023 AFCON as the team struggled to play with flare and struggled to create chances during the tournament.

If Finidi can get the Super Eagles to play exciting football again, Nigerians will canvass for him to be given the job on a permanent basis.

3. Give new players opportunities

One of the difficulties Nigerians had with Peseiro was his unwillingness to test out new players. Even in games where he could try out new things, the Portuguese stuck with his favourites.

However, Finidi must usher in a new competitive period by providing fresh players an opportunity to compete for a spot on the national team.

The two international friendly games against Ghana and Mali should allow him to try out players who could challenge some of the older players in the team.

Iwobi sends warning to Ghana

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Fulham and Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi is looking forward to the encounter between Nigeria and Ghana, which is massive in Africa.

The 27-year-old midfielder knows the importance of the fixture against the Black Stars and has promised the team will put in 100 percent to make sure they get a victory.
