  • The Nigeria Football Federation is actively in search of an ideal coach for the Super Eagles
  • A flurry of elite managers have indicated their interest in taking over as coach of the team
  • The NFF appear keen on the appointment of a world-class manager for the Nigerian team

The ongoing discussion surrounding the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) search for the next coach for the Super Eagles continues to evolve in complexity.

Following the flurry of elite coaches who sent in their applications to take over the role left behind by Portuguese coach, Jose Peseiro, reports had heralded the country's footballing circles about the possibility of Emmanuel Amunike, being named the next Nigeria coach.

However, a recent report from media outlet ThisDay suggests that the NFF's technical committee, responsible for appointing the new Super Eagles coach, are now considering looking beyond the current pool of applicants to secure a coach of 'world-class' calibre for the Nigerian team.

NFF seeks world-class coach

As per the report, a member of the Football Federation's Technical Committee, speaking anonymously, emphasised the NFF's apparent intention to bypass all current applications and think innovatively to select a new manager.

The report further asserts that no local manager currently meets the standards and criteria the NFF seeks in a coach for the Super Eagles. It concludes by stating that the Football Federation believes the current calibre of Super Eagles players deserves a top-tier manager to guide them through the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series, thus the quest for an elite coach.

While the notion of the NFF pursuing a world-class coach is appealing to many fans and stakeholders of the Nigerian team, it's important to note that recent coaching appointments by the federation have often fallen short of their stated aspirations during the application process.

Among the foreign managers who have expressed interest in the Super Eagles vacancy are Antonio Conceicao and former assistant to Pep Guardiola, Dominic Torrent.

It remains to be seen if any of them will be awarded the task of leading the Nigerian team.

NFF eyes Portuguese coach

In another report, Sports Brief stated that there is a growing inclination within the NFF to appoint Portuguese coach, Conceicao, as the next head coach of the Nigerian national team.

The 62-year-old is one of the many managers who have applied for the position of Super Eagles coach. He most recently managed the Cameroon national team.
