  • Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has praised Evidence Makgopa's rise
  • The Orlando Pirates striker was a crucial player for Bafana in the AFCON 2023
  • Mphalele has drawn parallels between the 23-year-old and legend Phil Masinga

Baroka FC chairman, Khurishi Mphahlele, has lauded Evidence Makgopa's rise, likening his potential to the late South African football legend, Phil Masinga.

Makgopa emerged as a vital element in Hugo Broos' strategic blueprint at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament.

Despite netting just once against Morocco in the Round of 16 and contributing an assist in the 4-0 triumph over Namibia, Makgopa silenced doubters with his displays in Abidjan.

Having aided South Africa in securing their first AFCON medal in 24 years, Mphahlele is convinced that the 23-year-old is on an upward trajectory in his career.

“God got his plans, and we are very much proud, we are excited, we are happy. When I watched Bafana, I just wanted them to give the ball to Makgopa so that he could do what we know he can do, score the goals...because Makgopa is the next Phil Masinga of our South African football," he said, as quoted by iDiski Times.

South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos, also harbours high hopes for Makgopa. Impressed by the striker's performances, Broos acknowledged his potential while pointing out the need for continued improvement.

The Belgian tactician, who guided the team to their first semi-final appearance since 2000, stressed the importance of Makgopa refining his skills and goal-scoring instincts through dedicated individual practice.

"I have confidence in Evidence [Makgopa]; he can become a very good striker. But again, they [Orlando Pirates] have to work with him, his first control, sometimes," Broos said, as quoted by Far Post.

The attacker's prowess was evident throughout the tournament, as he featured in all seven matches.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro Lauds Makgopa

Sports Brief earlier reported that Pirates head coach, Jose Riveiro, praised Makgopa's transformation.

Makgopa earned a spot in Riveiro’s starting lineup against leaders Mamelodi Sundowns when the DStv Premiership resumed on Saturday, February 11,

Riveiro attributed the player's growth to the experience gained from the tournament in Abidjan.
