Did Manchester United make a mistake in letting Jadon Sancho go?

He has rediscovered the form that made him one of the best players in the world, helping Borussia Dortmund reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The good news for the Red Devils and their fans is that there remains a possibility of him returning to Old Trafford in the near future.

Sports Brief examines the details of his loan move to Germany and the circumstances that led to his transfer last January.

Sancho and ten Hag's feud

The feud between Erik ten Hag and Jadon Sancho started when the Manchester United manager claimed that the English star wasn't selected in the matchday squad for their game against Arsenal last September due to his performances on the training ground.

That statement didn't sit well with Sancho, who blasted ten Hag for making him a scapegoat for a long time. A standoff ensued between the two, with Sancho refusing to apologise to the United manager for their dispute.

Ten Hag remained firm with his stance as well, banishing Sancho from first-team training. The Red Devils considered selling him to a Saudi Arabian club during the summer transfer window, but Sancho refused to engage in transfer talks with them.

Details of Sancho's loan move to Dortmund

Sancho finally made the switch during the January transfer window with Manchester United reaching a loan agreement with Borussia Dortmund.

The deal is valued at a minimum of £3 million, with Dortmund contributing the majority of Sancho's salary, per The Athletic.

The Red Devils stand to receive potential bonus payments based on Sancho's performances this season and there is no option to buy for the German club at the end of the loan deal.

The transfer has already paid dividends for both Dortmund and Sancho, with the Englishman helping the BVB reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

Possibility of Sancho returning to United

Sancho returning to Manchester United after the end of his loan deal is a foregone conclusion, given that he is still under contract with the Premier League club.

His deal with United will run until the end of the 2026-27 season, with Sancho earning £300k a week in wages.

United may consider bringing him back to the side following his outstanding displays for Dortmund in the Bundesliga and Champions League.

He received the Player of the Match award after Dortmund's win over PSV on Wednesday, scoring the opening goal in their 2-0 victory.

That being said, as long as ten Hag is United's manager, Sancho won't be seeing action for the Red Devils again. The feud between the two runs deep, and their differences still have not been settled.

A managerial change is not out of the question for United, though, after this season, with the club currently out of the Champions League places in the Premier League table.

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the rest of the United owners decide to sack ten Hag, that opens the possibility of Sancho playing for the Red Devils once more.

2024 Champions League quarter-finals draw

Sports Brief recently reported on the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals.

The draw will take place at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday, March 15.

Joining Dortmund in the last 8 are Manchester City, PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Atletico Madrid.
